Spices from the high ranges of Idukki

Shola Harvest takes its name from the shola — the high-altitude forest of the Western Ghats. From these hills come cardamom, black pepper and the traditional blends of Kerala's kitchens.

The harvests

What the high ranges grow, and the traditional preparations of Kerala they belong to.

  1. Cardamom

The green pod of the high ranges — the harvest this hillside is known for, at home in payasam and biryani alike.

  2. Black pepper

The vine that made the Malabar coast famous, dried to a deep, fragrant heat.

  3. Nutmeg & mace

Two spices from one fruit — the seed and its lace-like aril.

  4. Chukku Kaapi

Dry ginger coffee — Kerala's traditional warming brew of ginger, pepper and spice.

  5. Garam masala

The traditional whole-spice blend at the heart of the region's cooking.

From the sholas

The sholas are the cool, mist-fed forests folded into the upper reaches of the Western Ghats. Around them, in Idukki's high ranges, spice gardens have grown for generations — cardamom under the tree line, pepper vines on the slopes.

Kept in tradition

Kerala's kitchens have long known what to do with these hills: whole spices for the daily pot, garam masala for depth, Chukku Kaapi for the monsoon. Shola Harvest is being built around those traditions.

The Journal

Notes from the high ranges are on their way: the rhythm of the harvest seasons, the kitchen traditions behind each blend, and the story of every spice we grow up with in Idukki.
